On 5 Jun 1892 his marriage certificate said that he was a 23-year-old bachelor and a miner and that he lived at 6, Peel Square, Barnsley, Yorks. His father, Stephen Pells was an engine driver. 2

On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at 68 Cemetery Road, Barnsley, Yorks as a 31-year-old coal miner and hewer. 4
