On 25 Jan 1857 his son George's baptism record said he was a lighterman and he lived at 3 Ship Yard, St. Giles, Middx. 4

On 7 Apr 1861 he appeared on the census at 20 Cleveland Street, Stepney, Middx as a 33-year-old fishmonger. 6

On 4 May 1862 his son Charles Samuel's baptism record said he was a fishmonger and he lived at 13 Cleveland Street, Mile End, Middx. 3

On 15 Sep 1867 his son Frederick's baptism record said he was a fishmonger and he lived at Paragon Road, Hackney, Middx. 13

On 2 Apr 1871 John appeared on the census at 5 Red Lion Street, Finsbury, Middx as a 43-year-old oilman. 7

On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census at Field Lodge, Teville Road, Worthing, Sussex as a 53-year-old whose occupation is not clearly decipherable, but may have been house proprietor or horse property. 8

On 3 Sep 1891 his son Charles's marriage certificate said that he had been a tradesman. 10
