On 2 Apr 1871 John appeared on the census at 5 Red Lion Street, Finsbury, Middx as a 17-year-old carpenter. 3

On 2 Feb 1876 he applied for freedom of the City of London and was admitted and sworn to the freedom of the Merchant Taylors Company by patrimony. 8

On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census at 10, Oxford Terrace, Bramber Road, Fulham, Middx as a 27-year-old attendant S. K. museum. 4

On 5 Apr 1891 John appeared on the census at 13 Chaldon Road, Fulham, Middx as a 37-year-old attendant South Kensington museum. 5

On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at 71 Peterborough Road, Fulham, Middx as a 47-year-old civil servant, sc div, S. K. museum. 6
