• On 2 Apr 1871 he appeared on the census in Westbourne House, Witham Road, Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorks as a 33-year-old captain in the 5th West York Militia. 6

• On 18 Jun 1876 his son Godfrey William's baptism record said he was a major, 5th West York Militia and he lived at 28, Upper Park Road, Belsize Park, Middx. 10

• On 23 Oct 1878 his daughter Margery Radclyffe's baptism record said he was a major, 5th West Yorks Militia and he lived at 78 Fellows Road, London, Middx. 11

• On 3 Apr 1881 William appeared on the census at 78 Fellows Road, London, Middx as a 43-year-old Major in the 5th West Yorkshire Militia. 7
