• He attended Trinity College, Cambridge from 18 Aug 1860 to 1864 and migrated to Peterhouse, Oct. 25, 1864. Adm. at Gray's Inn, Nov. 17, 1860. Migrated to the Inner Temple, Nov. 20, 1861. Called to the Bar, 1865. On the Midland Circuit; afterwards on the North Eastern Circuit. Of Redworth House, Clifton, York. Died Sept. 13, 1881, at York. Father of Philip S. (1890). (Index Soc. Publications, Obit. Notices, 1881.). 8

• On 7 Apr 1861 he appeared on the census at Handsworth Grange, Handsworth, Yorks as a 22-year-old student at Grays Inn London and Trinity Hall Cambridge. 5

• On 21 Nov 1868 his daughter margaret Anne's baptism record said he was a barrister at law. 9

• On 2 Apr 1871 William appeared on the census at Mill Field House, Hull Road, York, Yorkshire as a 32 year-old barrister at law in practice and a landowner. 6
