• On 7 Apr 1861 he appeared on the census at 15 Henstridge Place, Marylebone, Middx as a 32-year-old gardener and a lodger in the home of Frederick Fisher, carpenter. 3

• On 2 Apr 1871 William appeared on the census at "Brooklands", Streatham, Surrey as a 41-year-old gardener and a servant in the home of Frances Brooks, the proctor's wife. 4

• On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census at The Lodge Cottage, Old Windsor, Berks as a 53-year-old gardener. 5

• On 5 Apr 1891 William appeared on the census at Wycombe Cottages, Old Windsor, Berks as a 57-year-old gardener and domestic servant. 8

• On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at 7 Rosebery Terrace, Old Windsor, Berks as a 72-year-old gardener. Also shown on the census was Olive Harmer, aged 7, his granddaughter. 6
