On 3 Apr 1904 he appeared as a witness to the marriage between Edith Seager, the sister of his future bride Kate, and Jonathan Carlton at St. Giles Church, Camberwell, Surrey. 4

On 16 Apr 1906 his marriage certificate said that he was a 30-year-old bachelor and an engineer and that he lived at 106 Brayards Road, Peckham, Middx. His father, Edmund Miles (deceased), had been a moulder. 2

On 2 Apr 1911 James appeared on the census at 13 Selbourne Road, Gillingham, Kent as a 34-year-old engine fitter. 3
