• On 2 Apr 1911 Lawrence appeared on the census at 89 Susans Road, Eastbourne, Sussex as a 29-year-old porter and a widower who had had 4 children, but they were away from home. 5

• On 10 Dec 1915 he was recruited. His home address was given as 186 Latimer Road, Eastbourne, Sussex and he was described as a porter. 6

• He served in the military as a private in the Royal Sussex Regiment from 10 Dec 1915 to 4 Feb 1919 in England until 14 Oct 1916 and then in France. He was wounded on 20 June 1917. 6
