bullet  Events

• His birth was registered during the quarter ended Sep 1869 at the Mansfield registration district, with GRO reference vol 7b, page 82. 2

• On 2 Apr 1871 Bernard appeared on the census at High Street, Wath on Dearne, Yorks as a 1-year-old. 3

• On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census at Ushaw College, Esh, Co. Durham as a 11-year-old student. 6

• On 5 Apr 1891 Bernard appeared on the census at Richmond Park, Handsworth, Yorks as a 21-year-old steel manufacturer. 9

• He appears to have changed his name, or at last dropped the first part, in his early twentiess. His name at school was given, on the 1881 census, as B W Smelter Joseph Young. His father calls him Bernard W in 1891, but the 1901 and 1911 censuses and his marriage and registration all give his name as Smelter Joseph Young. He is awarded probate of his father's will and his mother's will under his full name, so I suspect that there was no legal change of name. His death registration is in his full name and his entry in the National probate index refers to him by his full name, otherwise Smelter Joseph Young. 1 4 6 10

• On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at Richmond Park, Handsworth, Yorks as a 31-year-old unmarried steel spring manufacturer living at his parents' home. 4

• On 4 Jul 1910 he was awarded the probate of his father's will, together with his brother John and was described as an engineer. 5

• On 2 Apr 1911 Bernard appeared on the census at Westgate House, Worksop, Notts as a 41-year-old engineer and managing director of a company manufacturing spiral and other springs. 10

• On 14 Sep 1911 he was awarded the probate of his mother's will, together with his brother John and was described as an engineer. 11

• His death was registered during the quarter ended Jun 1954 at the Sheffield registration district, with GRO reference vol 2d, page 274. 8

• On 16 Aug 1954 his estate was probated at the London Registry to his widow Edith and to his son Gerard Francis Young, spring manufacturer. Effects £50,604 10s 11d. At the time of his death he was living at Brincliffe House, Osborne Road, Sheffield, Yorks. 7
