On 2 Apr 1871 he also appeared on the census at "Who'd have thought it", 24 Surrey Street, Portsea, Hants as a 30-year-old musician with his family. Most likely he was actually on the ship, but his family showed him as being present with them. 7

On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at 47 Brunswick Street, Maidstone, Kent as a 60-year-old tailor working on his own account from home. Also in the household was a boarder, Walter J. Foord, probably related to James's wife. 9

On 2 Apr 1911 James appeared on the census at Thrift Cottages, Knoxbridge, Kent as a 71-year-old navy pensioner who was paralysed. He was shown as having been married for 21 years with 11 children, 3 of whom had died. This is probably the total number of his children, rather than those of his current marrisge. It may also include his wife's children by a previous marriage. Wlater james Foord was still boarding with them. He may have been Emily's child by a previous marriage. 10
