• On 7 Apr 1861 he appeared on the census in Ringmer as a 39-year-old brewers labourer. Also present in the household was his niece, Harriett Holder, born abt 1852 in London. 5

• On 2 Apr 1871 he appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer as a 48-year-old inn keeper. 6

• On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer as a 59-year-old widower and inn keeper. 7

• On 5 Apr 1891 he appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer as a 74-year-old. 8
