On 17 May 1845 he was living in Horsted, Sussex when he was named as the informant on his mother Lucy's death certificate. 10

On 30 Mar 1851 James appeared on the census in Ringmer, Sussex as a 30-year-old brewer's labourer. 3

On 7 Apr 1861 he appeared on the census in Ringmer, Sussex as a 39-year-old brewers labourer. Also present in the household was his niece, Harriett Holder, born abt 1852 in London. 4

On 2 Apr 1871 James appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer, Sussex as a 48-year-old inn keeper. 5

On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer, Sussex as a 59-year-old widower and inn keeper. 6

On 5 Apr 1891 James appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer, Sussex as a 74-year-old. 7

On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at Dodsons Corner, Ringmer, Sussex as an eighty-five-year-old where he was shown as living on private income. He was a lodger in the home of William Durrant. Ellen Durrant had been his housekeeper in the Cock Inn for the past two censuses. 8
