• On 2 Apr 1871 he appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer as a 48-year-old inn keeper. 6
• On 3 Apr 1881 he appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer as a 59-year-old widower and inn keeper. 7
• On 5 Apr 1891 he appeared on the census at the Cock Inn, Ringmer as a 74-year-old. 8
• On 31 Mar 1901 he appeared on the census at Dodsons Corner, Ringmer as an eighty-five-year-old where he was shown as living on private income. He was a lodger in the home of William Durrant. Ellen Durrant had been his housekeeper in the Cock Inn for the past two censuses. 9
