On 7 Apr 1861 he appeared on the census in Fletching, Sussex as a 74-year-old agricultural labourer. 6

On 2 Apr 1871 John appeared on the census in Uckfield Union Workhouse, Uckfield, Sussex as a 86-year-old widower and a pauper, formerly a farm labourer. 7

His death was registered during the quarter ended Mar 1872 at the Uckfield registration district, with GRO reference vol 2b, page 74. 4
