On 30 Mar 1851 he appeared on the census at 103 Hammond Street, Netherthorpe, Yorks as a 22-year-old bone scale cutter & grinder. 8

On 7 Apr 1861 John appeared on the census at Thompson's Houses, Howard Hill, Nether Hallam, Yorks as a 32-year-old bone scale cutter. 9

On 3 Apr 1862 his daughter Polly's birth certificate said he was a scale cutter. 4

On 2 Apr 1871 he appeared on the census at 11 Heavygate Road, Nether Hallam, Yorks as a 42-year-old bone & scale cutter. 10
